How To Check In Using American Airlines App
If you're getting ready for an American Airlines flight, you're probably keen to check in to your flight online. With the American Airlines mobile app, you can do that, even from an Android or iPhone.
-
1
Sign up for an American Airlines rewards account well before your flight. By doing this on the AA.com website, you'll essentially be opening up your American Airlines rewards account. You'll get to check in by connecting your flights later.
-
2
Connect your airline reservation to the American Airlines account. You only need to do this if the flight ticket was booked under another company or method (like a third party travel site). If you booked it right through American, the flight will be connected already upon booking.
-
3
Wait for American Airline to send you a push notification on your device stating "Your trip from (pickup airport code) to (dropoff airport code) is ready for check-in." You will receive this notification about 24 hours prior to departure.
- You may also receive an email letting you know it's time to check in.
- If you don't receive a notification of any kind, know that you can check in within 24 hours of your flight, anyway.
- Don't wait too long to check in, especially if you don't have an assigned seat; some flights may be full and the best seats might go fast.
-
1
Open the American Airlines app. The airlines app will be the blue and red "wing" pattern on a white background. Often, tapping the notification then logging in will open the app right into the check-in process.
- When you use the app, not only can you store your airline ticket in a virtual wallet such as Apple Wallet (making TSA checks a breeze), it's a lot easier and more convenient to make changes as needed.
-
2
Activate the check-in feature. Find your trip itinerary with a blue "Check In" button below the trip details; if you tap the itinerary details, you can then tap the "Check In button" below this instead. You'll find another "Check In" button at the bottom of the screen after tapping.
-
3
Agree that you won't carry any of the hazardous materials American Airlines prohibits. American mentions those with Lithium batteries, explosives, aerosol, flammables, oxidizers and toxins. Tap the blue "Continue" button at the bottom to continue to the next step.
- If you tap the down arrow to the right of the title, you'll find a more complete list of items that are prohibited on your flights.
-
4
Pick your seats. Tap the seat, or tap an open seat.
- If you are not paying for Priority Seating (or are part of their Basic Economy seats), you must tap the "Next flight" button at the bottom of the page or tap "Skip seats" near the top left corner.
-
5
Grab your boarding pass. Tap the "Boarding Pass" button at the bottom after the app updates your reservation(s). Wait for the flights to become checked, then tap "Add to Apple Wallet" (or similar for an Android).
- If you have more than one pass for more than one flight you've checked into, you'll need to tap "Add All" to the dialog box that then displays, or review to see your passes before adding.
-
6
Move your seat (if possible). Tap the "Seats" button at the bottom, then tap your seat and make the adjustments.
- Tapping "Boarding Pass" at the bottom of the screen will send you to your boarding passes to your virtual wallet.

Question
How do I get TSA approved? I had it on my flight from BWI to CLT and was supposed to have it on my return trip, but it doesn't appear as TSA approved on my boarding pass on my phone.
Provided you put both tickets on the same reservation, this is just a glitch and you would need to contact American Airlines. If you bought the tickets separately, maybe you forgot to include it once?

Question
What is on the hazardous materials list?
The American Airlines website provides a full list of restricted items. The list is on the TSA website as well.
